Stupid on Saturday!

Let’s live in the moment. Let’s take advantage of any opportunities that pop our way. Social media is a merciless temptress, fresh from completing the Brathay 10 in 10, my Facebook feed keeps flashing me with unadulterated images of wonderful runs, races and events. After weeks of ‘running porn’, I just can’t say no. With little over six weeks to prepare I succumb to another runner’s plea to take their entry for the Race Across Scotland off their hands. Plus, at my age it’s important to enjoy challenges whilst I perhaps still can. Do things that scare you!

I now find myself sitting with my son on a delayed train (isn’t every train) from Yorkshire to Edinburgh, then Glasgow, Ayr finally to Stranraer.

A mini holiday for the kids as they get to witness the withering wreck I hope to be (although I’d rather they not see it but instead see a driven athlete, a picture of strength, resilience and relentless determination) as I cross the line before Wednesday at 10am.

The furthest completed event was the Montane Lakes in 2021. What’s the plan? Don’t have one. It really is a case of wing it. Just one step in front of the other, one mile at a time, one checkpoint after another. It’s only 55 miles per day to cover. Some pluses, I’m more organised than I was for the Dragon’s Back. Drop bags and support with my eldest sorted, I can orient a map and find a bearing now (I think). Fuelling strategy sorted.

What I hope to experience is a beautiful, memorable journey across one of the most wonderful countries in the world.

If you’re struggling to sleep, the magnesium tablets, sleeping tablets or white noise not working why not zone out watching a VERY slow dot meander across a screen.

Smile and enjoy the Race Across Scotland…
